Stony Point Community and City Information

Stony Point is a hamlet located in the town of Stony Point in Rockland County, New York and is about 35 miles north of New York City.

There should be a distinction made between the hamlet and town. The town of Stony Point is one of five towns of Rockland County and includes multiple communities of Bear Mountain, Bulsontown, Cedar Flats, Doodletown, Grassy Point, Jones Point, Tomkins Cove and Willow Grove. Most of these communities are uninhabited. The hamlet of Stony Point is the main community in the town of Stony Point.

Stony Point is amidst fantastic landscape, as it is a waterfront community located along the Hudson River and surrounded by the Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park. Stony Point real estate consists mostly of single family homes in beautiful and quiet tree-lined streets. The architecture of Stony Point homes vary from traditional colonials to contemporary mansions that really give the community a classic upscale suburban feel.

Main roads passing through Stony Point are US Route 9W and US Route 202, which actually conjoin through most of the hamlet and separate at Bear Mountain. Stony Point has excellent access to Palisades Interstate Parkway (Exits 14 & 15) a limited access highway that runs to New York City via the George Washington Bridge. Exit 16 of the PIP connects to roads within Harriman State Park. Public Transportation in Stony Point is available by the buses of Transport of Rockland (TOR.)

Stony Point is home to a section of a Class I Railroad line operated by CSX Transportation, which only operates freight trains and NOT passengers trains. So there is no direct commuter rail service in Stony Point. However, nearby Haverstraw has ferry service by NY Waterway and NY Water Taxi, both of which provide commuter service to Westchester County and Manhattan.

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Stony Point has a population of more than 11,000 residents. The hamlet has a total area of 6.8 square miles with 1.3 square miles of water. It is located at an elevation of more than 100 feet above sea level.

The racial demographics of Stony Point are 94.25% White, 1.37% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.61% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 7.06% of the population.

Stony Point has more than 4,000 households, many of which are wealthy. The median income for a household in the hamlet is $71,017, and the median income for a family is $82,124.

Stony Point is served by the North Rockland Central School District and is home to Stony Point Elementary School and James A Farley Middle School. The Rose Memorial Library is a public library that offers additional educational resources to the community of Stony Point.

There is an enormous amount of recreational opportunities in Stony Point with beautiful parks, school fields, and other public and private facilities.

Lowland Park is located along a stream and includes Rest Rooms, four Horseshoe Pits, Pavilion with picnic tables, Playground, Grills, Walking Track, 2 Basketball Courts, Kiddie Pool, and small ball field. Vincent Clark Park is a waterfront park with scenic views of Hudson river that includes rest rooms, grills, boat launch, playground, pavilion with picnic tables. River Front Park is a waterfront park with fishing pier, rest rooms, Volleyball Court, Playgrounds, Pavilion with picnic tables, Hudson River Views, Horseshoe Pit. Veterans Memorial Park is the Stony Point Town Park and includes rest rooms, two Tennis Courts, Pavilion w/picnic tables, Grills and multiple baseball fields that host Stony Point Little League games.

Near the Stony Point town park is the Patriot Hills Golf Club, which includes an 18 hole golf course, pro shop, club house with catering and driving range. The golf club is a municipal club and offers discounted rates for Stony Point residents.

The most fascinating park in the hamlet is the Stony Point State Park, a waterfront park with scenic views of the Hudson River which includes the Stony Point Battle Field and Stony Point Lighthouse. The Stony Point Battlefield is considered a National Historic Landmark for hosting the 1779 Battle of Stony Point during the American Revolutionary War. The Stony Point Battlefield includes a museum, which offers exhibits, as well as interpretive programs, such as live reenactments highlighting 18th century military life, cannon and musket firings, cooking demonstrations, and children's activities. The Stony Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse along the Hudson River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stony Point is home to sites that highlight not just local history, but American history.

The Marian Shrine of Stony Point is another spectacular site which offers great sightseeing opportunities. The Marian Shrine has dozens of life-size marble statues and includes Rosary Madonna, a 48 foot tall 6.5 ton statue that has become a major local landmark. The Marian Shrine covers about 200 wooded acres with walkways and picnic areas and includes multiple religious facilities.

In addition to local recreational areas, Stony Point is only minutes away from an abundance of opportunities for outdoor activities in Bear Mountain State Park and Harriman State Park.

Bear Mountain State Park offers large play field, shaded picnic groves, dock on the Hudson, lake and river fishing, a swimming pool, a zoo and nature area, hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails, and ski-jumps. Ice skaters can enjoy the outdoor rink which is open from late October through mid-March. The Perkins Memorial Tower on top of Bear Mountain affords breathtaking views of the park, the Hudson Highlands and River and Harriman State Park. The Merry-Go-Round at Bear Mountain State Park is a major attraction that features hand painted scenes of the park and 42 hand carved seats of local animals. The Bear Mountain Bridge offers a scenic drive as it crosses over the Hudson River and connects Rockland County with Westchester County.

Harriman State Park includes a lot of outdoor recreational options. Lake Sebago, Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati have man made beaches that offer a unique experience of swimming, sunbathing and picnicking in a forest environment. All three beaches have plenty of parking space, changing and shower rooms and open areas. There are over 200 miles of hiking trails and miles of scenic driveways through the mountains and trees of Harriman State Park. The dozens of lakes in the park offer great fishing opportunities and boating, and during wintertime ice fishing and snowmobile riding is available. There are numerous camping sites where campers can sit down and enjoy the atmosphere, including the Beaver Pond Campgrounds. There is a variety of diverse wildlife in Harriman State Park that offer visitors a beautiful animal sightseeing experience. Anthony Wayne Recreation Area of the park features Picnic and barbeque facilities, hiking paths, bike trail, play areas, cross-country ski trails. Incidentally, Anthony Wayne Recreational Area is named after the U.S. military general who fought in the Battle of Stony Point.

Having a waterfront location, Stony Point naturally has a large population of boating enthusiasts. Stony Point is home to multiple marinas that host hundreds of boats and multiple businesses to take care of summer docking, winter storage, and all other boat related services. When summertime comes around, Stony Point residents flock to the water and cruise the Hudson River on their boats.

Stony Point is home to the Penguin Rep, a professional theatre where the Penguin Repertory Company performs. The theatre includes an intimate setting with over 100 seats and has attracted large crowds beyond the local community, from all over the Hudson Valley. The Penguin Rep theatre has presented over 100 acclaimed productions by notable playwright such as Warren Leight (author of Side Man), Arthur Laurents  (West Side Story), Elizabeth Swados (Runaways), William Mastrosimone (Extremities), and Ronald Harwood (Taking Sides.)

The hamlet of Stony Point hosts the town hall and other town departments such as police department and fire department. Stony Point has multiple US post offices and is served by zip code 10980.

Stony Point has dozens of restaurants and eateries that serve a variety of cuisine ranging from Pizza to authentic Chinese, Sushi, Italian, Mexican, and American food. The restaurants of Stony Point are sure to satisfy a large range of tastes and appetites and are therefore known to be one of the best places to dine in Rockland County.

Stony Point attracts many local and distant visitors, and lodging accommodations are available at multiple hotels and motels in nearby communities that are only a few minutes drive away.
